The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. Formerly known as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, it was established on 16 July, 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.


The headquarters of the ICAR is located at Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi, and its other buildings are Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan I and II, and NASC Complex, New Delhi.


The Union Minister of Agriculture is the President of the ICAR. The Principal Executive Officer of the ICAR is the Director-General, who is also the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education.


ICAR has received international recognition, in 1988, it was awarded the prestigious King Boudouin Development Prize International for the best agricultural institution in the world. In 2004 again, the ICAR received the King Boudouin Award as the Chair of the Rice-wheat consortium.



Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)


The India Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), meant to impart training to farm workers, men and women, are established by: Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR)
